A word leans across the page in italics, and your eye gives it extra weight. It is tempting to read that visual emphasis as the ancient author’s insistence. Before building an interpretation around it, check who supplied the typography and what it means in this edition.
Printed and digital translations can use the same visual device for different jobs. The convention needs to be established locally, rather than borrowed from another book you have read.
Find the edition’s explanation
Look for a note on editorial conventions, a translator’s preface or a key to signs. Does it explain italics? Does the explanation distinguish the main text from footnotes? Record the wording of the rule in your own short note, together with its page or location.
If you cannot find an explanation, write that down. “Italicised in this edition; function not yet established” is a useful observation. It prevents a formatting feature from quietly becoming historical evidence.
Test the rule on more than one instance
Choose two or three occurrences and see whether the stated convention fits them. Do not decide the meaning from the first striking word alone. A word inside an italicised title may be doing a different job from one inside a translated sentence.
For an invented example, suppose an editor explicitly says that italics mark supplied words. A phrase containing one italic word would then require a different question from a phrase emphasised by a modern commentator. This is an illustration of reading a convention, not a claim about every edition.
Preserve the distinction in your notes
When copying a short passage for study, indicate whether you retained the edition’s formatting or added your own emphasis. Keep your interpretation on a separate line. If plain-text copying removed the typography, return to the edition before relying on the copied version.
Our discussion of brackets in translations offers a related check. The broader habit is to ask what belongs to the surviving text, what belongs to an editor’s presentation and what you have added as a reader. Those layers can all be useful once they are kept visible.
